What Is 400 GSM Fabric, and Why It Makes the Best Hoodies
Share
You have seen it everywhere in streetwear descriptions: 400 GSM hoodie, heavyweight 400 GSM fleece, premium 400 GSM construction. Most people buying hoodies have no idea what the number means or why it matters.
Here is the whole thing.
GSM explained
GSM stands for grams per square meter. Take one square meter of the fabric, weigh it, and that is the number. More weight means more fibre per unit area, which translates directly to thickness, density, warmth and durability.
For context:
| GSM range | Fabric type | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 100 to 150 | Very lightweight | Summer shirts, liners |
| 150 to 200 | Lightweight | Most fast fashion t-shirts |
| 200 to 280 | Mid weight | Standard hoodies and sweatshirts |
| 280 to 350 | Heavy | Premium sweatshirts |
| 350 to 400 and up | Heavyweight | Premium streetwear hoodies |
When a brand says 400 GSM, they are telling you the hoodie sits at the top of the heavyweight range. That is a deliberate choice. It costs more to produce and it delivers a categorically different product.
What 400 GSM actually feels like
If you have never held a true 400 GSM garment, the difference is immediate:
- Weight in your hands. Substantial. Not heavy like a coat, but definitively not light.
- Thickness. You can feel the density. It does not collapse against itself.
- Drape. It hangs properly off the body with structure. It does not cling or look flimsy.
- Warmth. Significantly warmer than mid weight. It earns the name.
- Print surface. A denser surface holds ink flatter and truer, so prints come out cleaner and more defined.
Why most hoodies do not hit 400 GSM
Manufacturing at 400 GSM costs more. More fibre, more processing, more material per garment. For brands optimising for margin, a 240 to 280 GSM hoodie achieves a similar looking product at a significantly lower cost.
The problem is that the durability and the feel do not survive long term use. Standard weight hoodies:
- Pill faster. The fabric surface deteriorates more quickly with washing and wear.
- Stretch out. They lose shape at the cuffs, hem and body.
- Thin out. The fabric becomes translucent with repeated washing.
- Lose warmth. Fibre compression over time reduces insulating capacity.
A 400 GSM hoodie holds its structure and feel across far more wash and wear cycles. It amortises over years rather than months.
Does 400 GSM work in the Indian climate
Fair question. India is predominantly warm to hot. Do you actually need it?
Yes, for specific reasons.
Winter use. North and Central India get real winter. Delhi, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh. A 400 GSM hoodie is appropriate and comfortable.
Air conditioning. Indian offices, malls, colleges and metro systems are aggressively air conditioned. A lightweight hoodie does not cut it in those environments.
Evening temperature drops. Even in warmer cities, nights can require a substantial layer.
How it looks. A 400 GSM hoodie looks better. The silhouette is correct. For streetwear, where fit and presence matter, the weight makes the look.

How to care for a 400 GSM hoodie
- Cold wash. Warm and hot water shrink cotton and degrade fabric structure faster.
- Turn it inside out. This protects the print during washing.
- Air dry when possible. Tumble drying on high heat stresses the fabric over time.
- Do not overwash. Unless visibly dirty, spot cleaning extends garment life significantly.
- Store flat or hanging. Do not compress hoodies in a drawer long term.
The bottom line
The weight tells you what a brand is actually committed to. If a brand claims premium and will not print the number, that silence is the answer.

On the pieces named here. These are part of our permanent range, so they stay, and we make them again when they run out. Drops are different: a drop runs for thirty days and then closes forever, the way AURA did. The product page always tells you which one you are looking at.
